1940-1958
Kirana Nasrim Joshi was born on August 7th, 1940 to Pakistani immigrant parents. Her mother was believed to be able to converse with the djinn, and she was well respected as an enchantress. Her father was a well-respected and learned man. He taught at the mosque when called upon for his wisdom, but he was also well-known for his incredibly long life. When he died in 1957, he was 115 years old. Kirana never remembered him being so old, and their faith community quickly embraced him as one of most holy of men. Talks of him possibly being a reflection of the Prophet (PBUH) encouraged Kirana to seek out a greater sense of knowledge. In 1958, she drew up a plan of action which she shared with her mother only, and on the night of October 30th, 1958, Kirana Nasrim Joshi stepped out of her beloved mosque and disappeared.
Hogwarts: 1951-1958
Kirana was admitted to Hogwarts in 1951 and was sorted into Hufflepuff House. She thrived among her loyal housemates, making friends with relative ease. Thankfully, the matters of the Muggle World outside Hogwarts didn't taint Kirana's ethnic and spiritual differences against her (and perhaps Professor Dumbledor helped make her time easier as well).
1960: Mother's Noble Death
In 1960, her mother died and was honored by being interred in the vaults of their mosque. It was rumored that 10,000 djinnis attended the interring and took her soul to Jannah with them. This is the only time when Kirana's appearance has been noted. She wore black and covered her face entirely, giving cause for some among her at the memorial to consider her to have aligned with the frightening mobsters known as the Death Eaters. Several members of her community wanted to know from where she had come,
but all Kirana would give them was the description of mountains near the Romanian border. This was a place known to have a community of Giants as well as other unsavory characters, but no further information was given, and Kirana disappeared again soon thereafter.
1968-1980: Ceylon Civilian Ambassador to British India
In 1968, she reappeared in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and began working with the Ministry there. At first, she was employed as a civilian asset gaining intelligence and liaising with the Indian Parliament. She spent this time also in Pakistan, teaching a number of subjects, including Transfiguration, at a secret Wizarding school hidden between that country and the Punjab region in India. The Ravi River School seemed to all passersby to be a good madrasa where Muslim orphans learned how to be better Muslims. Instead, it harbored and cared for witches and wizards fearing for their lives. It was here that Kirana began her career in teaching Transfiguration. As her work developed, her responsibilities began to include small amounts of espionage into the regional Muggle government presence in the Punjab region. Her frequent incursions undercover yielded several well-cultivated assets for the Ceylon Ministry, and Kirana grew her Punjab network. In 1978, she recruited a troublesome Punjab woman known as Latifah. Together,
the two women posed as teachers at the school of magic in Pakistan, with Kirana continuing in her role. Latifah had deep connections with an underground anti-British group in Punjab, and her mission was intended to keep the Ceylon Ministry knowledgeable of the actions and activities of this group. But, in 1979, Latifah began to feed false information to Kirana, leading to a massive fallout in late 1979. The Punjabi Resistance staged a massive rebellion against the British and Indian coalition government in that region, and for a time Kirana was a prime target for members of the group as well. She fled into Samarkand (Afghanistan) seeking protection to return to Ceylon, but it was here she was informed that a burn notice had been posted for her. She continued from Samarkand (Afghanistan) through Persia (Iran) and Assyria (Iraq), arriving finally in Anatolia (Turkey). The French government offered to take her as a political refugee, and she was escorted from Istanbul to Avignon, where she arrived at last in late 1980.
1980-1981: Transfiguration Professor at Beauxbatons Institute
With aid from the French Ministry, Kirana was successful in gaining the position of Transfiguration Professor at the prestigious French Wizarding School, Beauxbatons. Unfortunately, her timing was terrible, and her recent history stood against her in the eyes of the mighty and (seemingly) omnipotent British Ministry of Magic.
1981-1990: Interrogation, Resilience, and Imprisonment
Following the outbreak of rebellion lead by Lord Voldemort, and his eventual defeat by Harry Potter in 1981, unusual persons were being interrogated both on British soil and within the realm of British influence (including France). Kirana was even higher than most on the list of Foreign Persons of Interest because of her long period of absence from public life (between 1958-1968), and due to her dodgy involvement with the Punjabi Revolt of 1980, Kirana was summoned to London. She was harshly interrogated. Unwilling to give up such information, she was jailed and interrogated further over the next three years (1981-1984). When she resiliently refused to give up information about her missing years, the British Ministry sentenced her to indefinite time at Azkaban.
In 1990, the British Ministry officially released Kirana, but her position at Beauxbatons was untenable. She was forced to seek other positions in other places.
1991-2001: "Temporary" Transfiguration Professor at Ilvermorny
Kirana continued her journey westward, arriving in Boston in 1991. Despite severe reservations from the MACUSA, she applied for and was accepted as Transfiguration Professor at Ilvermorny School. The MACUSA applied so much pressure to their highly coveted school that the administration had to list Kirana as a "Temporary" Professor. Every year she had to have her position re-contracted to appease the American Ministry. Ilvermorny kept her on for 10 years. When Muslim terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001, harsh reprisals against Muslims stretched up the Atlantic coast. Seizing this golden opportunity to remove her, the MACUSA barred Ilvermorny from re-hiring Kirana for the 2002 school year. Even though the school offered to keep Kirana as a resident scholar (a position they created just for her), Kirana saw that she was being pushed out again and opted to move on.
2002-2016: The First Nations Undesirables
Settling on Charlton Island in James Bay (north of both Quebec and Ontario), Kirana developed a working community of outcast magical youth from the Inuit and Mi'kmaq First Nations. Her community extolled the virtues of intentional living, self-sustenance and radical inclusivity. Kirana began to instruct these youth in basic spellcasting and spellcraft, focusing especially on Charms and Transfiguration but also working with Herbology, Medi-wizardry, and Potion-making. She never established a school because the community believed in learning in real-time, so her lessons were incorporated into daily life. Kirana thrived in this environment and she remembers her Charlton Island years as some of the happiest of her life. But she knew that she couldn't give up in her fight for justice. Charlton Island had taught her that she needed to live her life fearlessly and on her own terms. So, in 2016, she left her beloved community and returned to England to face her nemeses of so many years past.
2016-2026: Confronting the British Ministry, Winning, Losing, and Moving On
The British Ministry kept a close watch on Kirana's activities from 2016-2020, blocking her from taking positions within the Wizarding World. When she moved back to the United Kingdom, Kirana was welcomed into a Sufi friendly Wizarding community in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Fortunately, Kirana's Sufi community invited her to help teach within the walls of their masjid in Oldham. Thus, in the early 2020s, Kirana continued educating magical youth in the enchantments of Sufism.
The British Ministry summoned Kirana again in 2026, officially pardoning her for her crimes (there were not, clearly) and welcoming her back into British Magical society. Kirana was gracious but declined numerous goodwill invitations, including a half-hearted invitation to work with the Ministry. In a tepidly acknowledged speech to the Wizengamot, Kirana explained the lessons she had learned from her years in self-inflicted imprisonment following her release from Azkaban. Her speech concluded with the following thoughts:
Upon her reinstatement into British Wizarding Society, Kirana decided to return to her old school seeking a position as Transfiguration Professor.

Secrets define Kirana's life, and as such, she is a very secretive person. She plays her cards very close to her chest and is hard pressed to reveal her secrets. She is a very pleasant woman, almost always kind and generous with her time. She is a patient woman as well, giving a lot of chances by nature to students and persons needing to make mistakes in order to learn. She is a devout person: her prayer rug faces toward the Qabah and she takes time to pray five times a day. Even at her age, she is demure with men, and sometimes she invokes her age to demand respect from those younger than her.
Kirana always dreamed of being a mother, so she has a tendency to treat youth more like her children than her students (sometimes). Her motherly instincts take on many forms of the role of mother: she cares for but also disciplines youth as a mother might. She does not hover over them, but she does keep those she feels especially fond of quite close. She knows she is vulnerable to being manipulated on an emotional level because of her maternal inclinations. This is a weakness she's never managed to master. Family is, in fact, a subject area Kirana is unwilling to discuss, and on days bearing significance in her family life, she has a tendency to become melancholy and reclusive.

It is a remarkably difficult thing to realise that you have allowed another person or organisation of persons to control your perception of yourself. When I came to realise that I had allowed your organisation to define for me who I was, I grappled with the truth that I had let you win a very important battle against me. More than this, I grappled with the truth that I had lost such an important battle. But if I learned nothing else from my time on Charlton Island, then at least I learned this: No one can define another person unless that person lets them. Therefore, I stand before you to tell you that I cast off your profiling of me. I do not accept living my life on anyone else's terms but my own. And today, I liberate myself from the shackles of the past: I am not a prisoner of Azkaban because I have chosen freedom. I am not a servant of the Ceylon Ministry because I have chosen freedom. I am not a Person of Interest or a Death Eater because I have chosen freedom. And I speak these words with much gratitude for your pardoning, but not because it is your approval I seek. I have liberated myself, and I am overjoyed that you good Witches and Wizards now bear witness to my autonomy here, this day.
