When Janine Thornton and Michael Taylor met at UCLA Medical Center, people said it was magic. They were both starting up their residencies and something just clicked between them. Mike would later joke that Janine slipped him a love potion… a claim she still hasn’t denied.
It was the traditional love story: Boy meets girl, boy asks girl to marry him, boy finds out girl is a witch, boy flips out a little, boy gets over it and realizes it really didn’t matter. It turned out that while Mike had been stressing through medical school, his bride to be was already a skilled healer hoping to get some new experiences by trying her hand at Muggle medicine.
So yes, married. And two years later came Jeremy.
He was the wrinkly sort of infant, a bit on the fussy side, but nothing to be overly concerned with. Mike would often chant “Mu-ggle… mu-ggle… mu-ggle…” over the crib, to which Janine threatened to double his love potion dosage. Mike lost out, but couldn’t have been happier when, at the age of four, Jeremy had managed to stack his blocks up to the ceiling. At least, they think it had been Jeremy. He showed few other signs of magical ability. Every so often the frozen waffles might be on the kitchen counter in the morning, or the milk cartons would be replaced with soda bottles, but that might have been a coincidence.
Like everyone else in his extended family, he started Muggle school at the age of five. It took him a bit longer to figure out that his classmates wouldn’t have ridden a winged horse, didn’t know what Quidditch was, nor did they understand the awful smells that filled the house on a potion making day. By the time Jeremy figured out the difference between Magical and Muggle, it was too late. Even his teachers thought he was a bit strange. When the school started talking about psychologists and special classes, the Taylors decided they had had enough. Jeremy was pulled out of his fourth grade class to be home schooled until he was old enough to go to Hogwarts.
And there was the trick. Jeremy needed to be at Hogwarts where he could get a fresh start and hopefully gain some confidence. Making the move to London from Los Angeles was difficult, but the family felt it was necessary. His parents were overjoyed and rather relieved when he got his letter. He was sorted into Ravenclaw like his two older cousins, which meant he had at least them to run to if he had any problems.
It was a rough start at Hogwarts. Still suspicious of others and concerned about his own shortcomings as well as his blood status, he spent a lot of his first year trying to come off as being stronger and more important than he was. When he felt he couldn’t brag or bully his way out of a situation, he took to hiding. The hiding worked fairly well in the hallways and common rooms, but not so well in the class where a few of the teachers found the small boy hard to handle. More than one professor decided that the best way to deal with the withdrawn and surly young man was to ignore him and let him read quietly on his own.
But eventually, he started fitting in... sort of. By the time he hit his teens, he had come out of his shell a little, joined the quidditch team and started participating in class. He even managed to make a few friends and has started to set a few goals for himself. It was around this time that he decided he wanted to be an architect, and he really started focusing on his school work and spells more, even managing to earn the Head Boy badge in his final year.
He is currently seeking admission into Cambridge University, one of the top Architecture schools in the world. He is also hoping to secure a part time internship with a magical builder in order to learn the wizarding side of his chosen career path.
Personality Description:
Ah yes, another Thornton. Jeremy has a lot of over-achieving cousins to live up to, but probably won’t. Tad is the Quidditch star, Allegra is the brain, Kyrie is the social butterfly, Drew is the schemer, and Nicky is the musician. Heck, even Jeremy’s little sister gets to be the cute one. He wasn’t even sure he really counted as a Thornton. Mommy was the Thornton, not him.
Who is Jeremy? No one special really. He isn’t all that smart. He isn’t all that coordinated. He isn’t out going. And he’s kind of funny looking. In Muggle grade school, he was “the weird kid” but that hardly counts, does it?
He tries, if that really matters. He wants to do well. But it’s hard.
He’s quiet and reserved, more than a little intimidated by the legacy he feels he has to live up to. If he had been 100% Muggle, he would have been the dorky kid who spent all of his time on the internet playing video games and getting lost in fantasy-based RPGs. Growing up in a mostly magical household, he is just the dorky kid.
Still unable to totally overcome his experiences in Muggle School, he’s very suspicious and wary of new people. He does not let his guard down easily and tends to lash out verbally at people before any perceived attack he feels is eminent. On the other hand, if he feels somewhat comfortable with a person, he will claim them as a friend even if they can’t stand him. Plus, having the title of Jeremy’s friend is no claim to fame. He will still hold major grudges and suspicions against even his best of friends. Aside from all of this, he has managed to make a few real friends and it's only around these people, along with his family, that he can really relax and be his true self.
Physical Description:
Height: 6' 2"
Weight/Build: Slim, athletic build
Skin Tone: fair complexion achieving a slight tan when out in the sun
Hair Color and Style: dark brown,
Eye Color: blue
Jeremy spent quite a few years being on the short side and a bit scrawny looking, and it took him a while to finally get his growth spurt. He currently stands at 6'2" and probably won't grow much more. His blue eyes seem a bit large for his face, his dark brown hair never seems to lie flat on his head and his ears stick out a little. He usually wears a scowl on his face, giving the impression that he’s in a foul mood even when he’s not feeling particularly cross. He is fair skinned and pale due to his preference to stay inside but doesn’t burn in the sun easily. During the summers back home where he will venture outside in shorts and t-shirts, he can work up a pretty decent tan.
He has a slight build and tends to hunch when he walks. Smiles are rare, but when he does, he shows a set of slightly crooked teeth that really don’t bother him as much as his ears. His dark hair is worn short and is neither straight nor curly. It’s usually just messy. He prefers to wear dark colors, but has gotten quite a few hand-me-downs from his older cousins which he likes to wear simply because they were once theirs.
Likes/Dislikes:
Special Talents/Knacks:
Jeremy’s biggest talents are avoiding anything undesirable and pissing people off. Other than that, he is a strong swimmer and a decent Quidditch player (but claims he thinks the game is over rated). Jeremy is an avid reader and is usually a strong book-learner. He likes taking things apart and then putting them back together. He can do more spells than he gives himself credit for, most of which help him with his building projects. He enjoys cooking and has transferred those skills into his potions. He pretends he can’t dance, but actually took formal lessons before coming to Hogwarts and is pretty good.
RP Example:
It was her. The girl with the red hair was sitting in the front row of the class and Jeremy stood at the doorway, wondering exactly what he should do. He could be brave and take the empty seat next to her, or he could slip into the desk right behind her where he could admire that fiery mane unnoticed… or he could totally wimp out and take his usual seat in the back of the room, unable to speak to her and guaranteed to have someone sit in front of him to block his view of the girl.
One of his classmates pushed past him, that know-it-all Huffle kid who thought he was a rock star just because he was on the Quidditch team and all the girls giggled like idiots when he walked past them in the halls. What a jerk.
Jeremy pretended to look at the announcements on the bulletin board as he debated on exactly what to do. The girl with the red hair was laughing at some joke her friend had told and the Ravenclaw frowned at his shoes, knowing he’d never be able to make the girl’s eyes sparkle like they were.
“Alright, class! Take your seats and open your books to page 147,” the professor announced. With a heavy sigh, Jeremy trudged to the back of the room and took his usual spot. Maybe tomorrow.
